After suddenly going into labor in the wee early morning hours, we loaded up our two sons and quickly headed to the hospital within 45 minutes. On the way, we contacted our amazing photographer friend, Sarah, and she rushed towards the hospital as well. After getting checked in, we found out that I was already dilated to 9 centimeters! I had been feeling the urge to push since leaving the house, and it was getting stronger by the minute with each contraction. I was anxiously waiting for my obstetrician and photographer to arrive! My doctor was there shortly and ready to deliver and Sarah was at the hospital front desk getting checked in. Even though I knew she was so close and was almost to the delivery room, my body could not wait any longer!!! With only 1 ½ pushes our baby was quickly born!!! Although Sarah had missed the actual delivery, she captured so many precious photos of our first moments together.
This was such a special time for another reason; we had waited until birth to find out the gender of our new baby! The doctor had placed a washcloth for us to remove and reveal the gender. We were so excited to see that we now had a BABY GIRL!! The other special occasion was that our boys, who had been patiently waiting in the next room, got to have their own reveal moment when the nurse let them remove the washcloth as well! Our oldest son cried tears of joy when he learned that he now had a baby sister, exactly what he had been praying for!
How Many Children Do You Have?
My husband and I have 3 children: 2 boys, ages 8 and 5, and our newest baby girl. We’ve discovered what a blessing they are and would love to have several more children!
What are your must birth items?
Something I discovered right before my baby was born was almond oil! I read about using this right after birth when diapering your new baby. You simply rub on baby’s bottom and it keeps their sticky tar meconium poop from sticking to them!! Clean up is such a breeze! I absolutely recommend everyone to have this readily available right after delivery!!
Tell us about the first days of bringing your baby home, the ups and the downs
After the birth of my third baby, I felt so confident and comfortable in my role as a mother. Having older children was such a big help and a wonderful blessing! Juggling the various needs of 5 people initially was a bit overwhelming, but together we have adapted into a good routine.
Did you bottle or breastfeed, what is your advice for new mothers?
I have breastfed all 3 of my children. For me, it was an easy choice to breastfeed since my mother was a lactation consultant and has always been so encouraging! I love the naturalness and simplicity of being able to feed my baby anytime and anywhere. I have been amazed every time to see that my babies all knew how to root around and were able to nurse just minutes after birth! I’ll admit that it was somewhat painful in the beginning as I figured it all out, so my advice to new mothers is to not give up if you experience any difficulties. It will hopefully improve as you learn the ropes, and if it doesn’t please seek help from a lactation consultant.
What are some of your most cherished memories of motherhood?
There are so many to choose from! But I’d have to narrow it down to the special feeling I get when I’m breastfeeding my baby girl and she’s looking up at me white her big hazel eyes; watching my 3 children playing together as the 2 older brothers are making their baby sister laugh; the sweet notes that my boys write to me; spontaneous picnics; and seeing the eagerness in my son’s eyes as they desire to lend daddy a helping hand while he works on the tractor. These are just a few of the cherished moments that I wish I could bottle up and save forever.
What most surprised you about this birth?
I was amazed at the ease and speed of delivery! However, the long-awaited gender reveals at birth was the most special and surprising moment about this birth!!
What has been your greatest challenge in motherhood?
Time management!!! Being able to work from home has been a huge blessing! But I am faced daily with the challenges of balancing 3 children, homeschooling, running the family business, and managing a household. Getting up early and starting my day before my children wake up has been the best way to get the most accomplished.
Has your style changed since becoming a mom?
Not really, I have always been pretty easygoing and laidback. So when I became a mom this has helped me to “go with the flow” and be flexible with whatever the day brings!
If you get any “me time”, how do you wind down or spend it?
I love being outdoors, so any free time is usually spent outdoors in a hammock listening to the birds chirping, or just cruising around our land and photographing beautiful scenes and sunsets.
How has having a birth changed your relationship?
My husband and I have realized the importance of working together in order to keep things flowing smoothly. I am so grateful to have his help with the laundry, housework, the kid’s schooling, etc. Teamwork is key!!
Looking back to your first days of parents, what would you tell yourself?
It’s very easy to be overwhelmed and concerned about so many things as a new parent. I wish I could reassure new moms not to overly worry and stress about everything! It’s so helpful to have someone that you can ask about your concerns, such as your mother, mother-in-law, or another older woman.
What is your greatest joy in being a mother?
We have spent a lot of time carefully raising and training our children. Being able to now begin to see the fruits of our labor has been very rewarding and brings my heart much joy. Our ultimate goal is for our children to grow and become little gentlemen who love and serve the Lord, and are an asset wherever they go in life.
If you could give your child(ren) one piece of advice what would it be?
Continually nourish your relationship with Jesus. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
Tell us about your session and what the images mean to you.
I absolutely love the way that Sarah and I met! After weeks of looking online for a birth photographer, I was having trouble finding one that photographed with my desired style. After running across Sarah’s website and loving her bright and airy style, I sadly noticed that she only offered Maternity and Family Sessions. I contacted her and asked if she would consider photographing my delivery. She gladly accepted and said that as long as I didn’t mind being her first birth session she’d be more than happy to venture into this new world of birth photography!! She is so sweet and funny and we quickly became friends after we discovered many similarities and coincidences in our lives!
Bless her heart, Sarah tried so hard to get to the hospital in time for our delivery! And even though she didn’t make it for the grand entrance, the photos she did take of our first moments together, the boys meeting their new baby sister, and our first family photos are absolutely priceless and will be cherished for years to come.
